Here’s the text of the postcard:

INCITE! LA Opposes Arizona’s SB 1070 and supports the call to boycott the state.
We at INCITE! LA recognize expressions of violence against women, transgender, and gender non-conforming people of color as including colonialism, police brutality, immigration policies, reproductive control, etc…
- Because Arizona is constructing a xenophobic state that has become increasingly violent towards its immigrant and non-white people.
- And because criminalization of immigrants and undocumented people enables violence against women and queer people of color including: sexual violence on the job or by law enforcement officials; exploitation of immigrant workers including women; profiling women of color, particularly trans women of color, as sex workers; assault at the border; separation from children and families; lack of recourse for domestic violence survivors, including the deportation of the survivors, etc.
- And because the racist criminalization of immigrants reinforces heterosexist violence.
- And because the racist legislation is in violation of American civil rights as it legalizes racial profiling of undocumented and documented residents alike.
- And because profiling powers are also used to harass transgender and gender non-conforming people of color, reinforcing heterosexism.
- And because the boycott movement in response to Arizona’s failure to approve a Martin Luther King Jr holiday from 1990 to 1993 played a role in the state’s lose of 170 conventions and $300 million.
- And because the legislation is a manifestation of racism and hate against immigrant and non-white people.
- And because the law further deters immigrant and non-white people from reporting crimes committed against them in the United States as it makes silence a necessary condition for survival.
I feel compelled to point out that an unintended consequence of this boycott is that the workers employed by these companies (who may or may not agree with the ban) could lose their jobs if the companies’ profits decrease as a result of a boycott.
Also, just because a company is located in AZ doesn’t mean it supports SB 1070, so it’s best to investigate further which companies do and do not support the bill. For example, you’ve got Buffalo Exchange on your list, but they’ve issued a statement reading: Customers, please note… Buffalo Exchange is NOT in favor of Arizona immigration bill SB 1070.
Just a thought. 🙂
