INCITE! LA Opposes Arizona’s SB 1070 and supports the call to boycott the state.

We at INCITE! LA recognize expressions of violence against women, transgender, and gender non-conforming people of color as including colonialism, police brutality, immigration policies, reproductive control, etc…

  • Because Arizona is constructing a xenophobic state that has become increasingly violent towards its immigrant and non-white people.
  • And because criminalization of immigrants and undocumented people enables violence against women and queer people of color including: sexual violence on the job or by law enforcement officials; exploitation of immigrant workers including women; profiling women of color, particularly trans women of color, as sex workers; assault at the border; separation from children and families; lack of recourse for domestic violence survivors, including the deportation of the survivors, etc.
  • And because the racist criminalization of immigrants reinforces heterosexist violence.
  • And because the racist legislation is in violation of American civil rights as it legalizes racial profiling of undocumented and documented residents alike.
  • And because profiling powers are also used to harass transgender and gender non-conforming people of color, reinforcing heterosexism.
  • And because the boycott movement in response to Arizona’s failure to approve a Martin Luther King Jr holiday from 1990 to 1993 played a role in the state’s lose of 170 conventions and $300 million.
  • And because the legislation is a manifestation of racism and hate against immigrant and non-white people.
  • And because the law further deters immigrant and non-white people from reporting crimes committed against them in the United States as it makes silence a necessary condition for survival.
